Why does my Trooper run in 4WD but not in 2WD?

I'm assuming you mean that the engine runs, but it will not drive. If that is the case, you have a failed driveline part for the rear wheels. It could be a failed u-joint, but you would likely notice that. Most likely, your rear differential has gone bad.

Sounds exactly like a slip in the linkage that changes it from 4wd to 2wd. Or the engage switch is out of order.

You are probabaly locked into 4wd and do not realize it. Try releasing 4wd and see if it will go back to 2wd.

It could be a broken rear axle, a broken rear differential, broken rear drive shaft, or a problem in the transfer case. It could get rather expensive to fix, actually. The best way to make the diagnosis is to have a dealer look at it. I don't recommend driving it very far with a drive train problem.

Well maybe the 4wd switch is on or the transfer case is stuck in 4wd. Sometime they get sticky if you don't use them regularly.

It sounds like the only axles working are in the front. The transfer case for the 4wd may need repaired.
