There are many reasons. First, are you sure it is a maple tree? Sounds trite, I know. Secondly, a lot depends on the weather and what part of the country you are living in. Areas that are too hot, then suddenly become cold, can cause the leaves to turn brown.

Leaves turn red due to stress and will not if they get too much nitrogen fertilizer, if planted in turf being fertilized. Too much water will do it also.

If it isn't cold enough you won't get the color. But more likely is cultivar, not all maples turn red. Buy maples in the fall, when in color.

Not all maple trees will have foliage that turns red in the autumn. What variety of maple do you have? A sugar maple's leaves will turn a bright yellow in the autumn, while other varieties of maples turn various shades of orange or even stay green.
