What can damage the trunk of a maple tree?

My maple tree appears to have some bark peeling off the trunk and seems to be damaged.

Many things can damage the trunk of a maple tree. Termites can burrow in and it will damage the the trunk and possibly kill the tree. If the tree gets a might or a bug in it the bark will peel off and it will in time kill the tree.
