Without knowing the engine maintenance history it is really hard to say. More than likely it is in need of a good engine tune up.

It could be numerous reasons that are causing your Ford Escort to run rough. The most simple reason that could be causing a rough running would be the spark plugs have gone bad. If the spark plugs are good, move on to the coil packs that are near the plugs. Replace any bad coils.

There are many reasons for an engine to run "rough". Your engine could need a tune up requiring a replacement of any of the following: spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor, ignition coil, or timing chain/belt. The fuel system may be dirty and requires a check for the injectors, fuel rail, and fuel line.

I owned a 1989 Ford Escort, and some of the causes of mine running rough was the vehicle was in need of new tires, which cause vibration while driving. Also it needed a tune-up. When it was not hitting on all 4 cylinders, it had a tendency to chug along.

You could have water in your gas line. You need a tune-up. Your air filter and oil filter is clogged.
