Dogs are just like people. When they are tired and cranky and want to be left alone, they growl. Just like people.

Growling is a distance increasing behavior. If he's tired then he is likely trying to get some space so he can rest safely.

Growling is one way a dog communicates. Growling when tired is perfectly normal and the dog is just showing irration that he is not able to rest.

If he is tired, he may not want to be messed with. It could be that someone is standing too close and he just wants to be left alone. Dogs also dream, and he could be growling at something he is dreaming about.
