Your cat is looking for attention, if the book is on a table, the book is physically higher making them easier for you to see. If you are reading the newspaper, the cat will assume you will pay it some attention if it comes in your line of sight. Try staring at some random spot and see if kitty follows...

Do you have an excessive amount of them? Perhaps in tall piles about the room? Cats generally prefer to be on the highest point in the room they can get to. If this isn't the case, a book cover might be just the right mixture of firm and soft.

Cats enjoy being on elevated surfaces whether it be on a stack of books or your top of the fridge.

It could be that the animal likes the way it feels and the coolness of it when its hot and trying to find a spot to cool down. Also its very flat so it could help the cat stay leveled and feel secure. Might also feel its just there's and they just like it.
