Headgear applies outside pressure to move teeth. Sometimes it can be worn only at night or just a certain number of hours a day. The more it is worn, the sooner you don't have to wear it any longer. There are certain orthodontic problems that cannot be corrected just with braces.

A headgear is embarrassing, but it performs a function that wires alone cannot do. When your bite needs to be made wider, an outside force needs to be applied that pushes the teeth away from the midline. Especially on the bottom, only a headgear can do this.

Headgear is not commonly used anymore, but is for extreme cases of teeth-straightening and orthodontics. Braces are normally adequate to meet the orthodontic goals.

Headgear serves to slow the outward growth of the upper jaw. The gear itself serves as a form of stabilization.
