Why do some cultures wear jewels on their forehead and what do the different colors mean?

In some cultures this is a simple mark of beauty, in others it is a recognition of a third eye or additional vision, an attempt to communicate a desire to see more deeply on a spiritual level.

They wear jewels on the forehead for beauty and the color on the forehead means they are married. Some may not prefer to put colors(sindhoor) on the forehead.

It's just another shiny object to draw attention to one's flattering features like hair, eyes, etc. Not unlike earrings.
