A common occurrence that may cause this problem is either the DVD player is hooked up to the wrong input, or the cables are not correctly connected. On a normal RCA cable, the yellow provides video, and the red and white provide left and right sound channels.

Is the TV on? Is the DVD player plugged into the television? Is it plugged into the correct places? Is the disk placed in the player correctly? Check those.

If you are playing a DVD on a computer, make sure you have a DVD codex. If you are playing to a television make sure the right input is selected.

This is probably from having the DVD player hooked up to the TV correctly, or not at all. Check this and try again
