For 2009 if you are single and not a dependent, you can earn $9,350 and owe no tax. If you are married, the amount is $18,700. If you or your spouse are over 65 you can earn an additional $1,400 if single, $1,100 if married.

Are you single or married? If you are single the amount is $8950 if you are under 65 and $10300 if you are over 65. Married filing joint is $17,900 and it increases if you or spouse are over 65. this includes all income including interest, unemployment, etc.

If you are making the money in wages you have to file only after earning more than $3400 dollars. If you are reporting from a form 1099 then the amout is $400 dollars.
