Dogs rely heavily on their superior sense of smell for information about their environment. In order for these spectacular noses to work well they need to be in a constant wet state. Molecules from the air need to be able to stick to the nose so they can be picked up by the receptors there.

It helps the dog to sense smell better. Smell receptor can only detected particle in the air after they have been moisten. Thus, wet nose provides better sense of smell.
