Not all bowling shoes are ugly, just the shoes you would typically rent at a bowling alley. I think the main reason for this is to prevent theft. After all, who would want to wear those shoes outside the bowling alley?
I have seen shoes that the establishment rents to bowlers that were multi-colored. However, I was once able to buy a pair that were tan and resembled Hush Puppies.
