Answer by  Neilson (12)

Several factors contribute to athletes wearing these sleeves. The main reason is to keep the shooting arm warm. When muscles cool down, they contract. Another use for the sleeves is said to be to prevent scratches on their arms. Because players have worn these in NBA games, they've become popular among younger players.

Alvin Iverson wore this sleeve because of an elbow injury. Players now wear it as a fashion statement as well as to prevent future injuries.

Basketball players wear shooting sleeves because it keeps their arms warm. Usually they are just used on their dominate arm but are sometimes used for both arms if the player feels that it is necessary. With all the pressure added in taking the big shots players often lose feeling in their arms and need the extra warmth.

Basketball players wear seperate sleeves because usually the players that wear them have elbow problems. This sleeve helps protect the injured elbow, but keeps from restricting their shoulder ability.

Those are actually compression sleeves. Basically they are made of a material to help keep the arm muslces warm to help enhance the athletes preformance. The compression sleeve also helps wick away sweat keeping the athlete dry and comfortable.
