The reason there are so many different religious groups is that people are in constant disagreement on certain areas of doctrine. These people leave that church and start another with whatever they think to be true. Just varying shades of the same really.

Because people have many different opinions about the nature of faith and religion. Often times when an organization comes under new management, practices will change and cause people to split.

Over time, people have disagreed over the church's teachings, so they would split off and form their own church. It would become popular, only to find that someone else disagreed, splintered off, and formed their own denomination. This pattern repeated for years until we have all the denominations we have today.

The main reason is that people do not agree. Most religious texts are very old and there are far too many possible interpretations for only one denomination to explore.
