Dimples on a golf ball make it more aerodynamic. They enable the ball to fly further on longer shots by reducing side spin but produce more spin on shorter shots to make the ball stop quickly when needed.

There are three dimples on a golf ball to help reduce drag as it soars through the air. As the air goes around the ball after the player hits it, it creates drag. The design with the three dimples make it so the drag is less and the air can flow around it much easier.

Early golf balls were relatively smooth and did not go nearly as far. They found out that the more small cuts or dimples on the ball, the farther the ball flies. The dimples create a layer of vacuum around the ball as it spins and the ball flies further. There are many different styles of dimples that do different trajectories.
