It originated from a more punk or grunge look, and when the 'punk' look became popular, ripped up jeans made their appearance. Showing skin definitely is a plus too though.

Ripped jeans are in fashion to show extra skin, and to make the wearer look unconventional and young. This trend has been in fashion since the 1960's.
