Why are my cats from pawing at the food bowl?

Sometime this is a leftover trait from when they lived in the wild. It is an act of burying the food so that others don't eat it. If you have more than one cat sharing a bowl, this is a definite possibility. Some do it to show dislike for food.

My himilayan cat does this. It is instinctual behaviour. in the wild cats will bury their uneaten food the hide it. sometimes this behaviour is more predominant in the runt of the litter trying to protect its food from be taken or in cats from multiple cat households. or it may simply be marking its territory around its food bowl

Your cats might be hungry and are therefore trying to express that hunger to you. They may also be feeling playful, and pawing with the bowl as if it were a toy.

You can try to keep the bowl up a little higher then normal. This might just make your cat lean in further. The only thing that you can really do is get a bowl that will stay sturdy on the ground so that you don't have to clean up as much of a mess.
