Spasms of the middle and lower back are common signs of muscle fatigue or recent over work. Misalignment of the disc space in your upper back can also contribute to this condition. A lack of hydration may also be the culprit.

There are many potential causes. Some common ones include - repetitive stress on the back from sports or lifting, a persistent injury like a strain, and poor posture.

Back spasms could be due to muscle strain or some accidental injury. Sometimes it is also caused due to the posture. If we sit continously for long hours then we get it. The mattress on which you sleep is also sometimes responsible as it is advisable to sleep on hard beds.

The most common reason for back spasms are over-pulled or sprained muscles, Also sitting or standing for long periods of time can cause cramping along with spasms. Bad posture can be a culprit as well as dehydration, injury, or arthritis. If your core lower back muscles can not support your back, this can also be a cause.

You could be having spasms for several reasons one is due to some trauma your back sustained or several other reasons. I would contact your doctor to have it evaluated. Also, try heat on your back at night to see if that helps to relax the muscles that are being bothered by the spasms.
