Season 5 of American Idol aired in 2006. This season included Randy, Paula and Simon as judges and Ryan Seacrest was the host. Taylor Hicks, the grey haired crooner from Alabama, took the title. Katherine McPhee was the runner up. Hicks was a unique contestant because of his looks, age and bluesy singing style.
