Aristarchus of Samos, in the third century (BC) was the first to suggest it, but it was only taken seriously in 16th century when Nicolaus Copernicus supported it.

It's almost certain that many people proposed the sun was the center of the universe. However, the person most accredited with changing the standing belief that the Earth was the center of the universe was the great Galileo Galilei, who was labeled a heretic by the inquisition for this.

No one person was ever credited as being the first to think the sun was at the center of the universe. However, until Galileo came along many people did think that the Earth was the center of the universe.

Nicolaus Copernicus was the first to propose a heliocentric solar system model. He was not proposing a heliocentric universe, however.

copernicus n galileo.they believed in heliocentric theory instead of geocentric theory.the ancient catholic church disapproved their idea of heliocentric theory...n they largely support aristotle's proposed theory.
