All cultures have a sun god because the sun is universal and unexplainable by physical means. Egypt is most known for Ra, but he is not the only sun deity. The Chinese believe that there were originally ten suns, but the emperor shot nine of them down. The Aztecs consider the sun to be the ruler of Heaven.

You have Amaterasu in Japan, and for Italy and Greece Apollo. In old times, everything was thought to be due to a god or goddess, with out them nothing worked.
