It is my understanding that this can be done at age 62 for one amount, age 66 for another, and age 70 for still another.

Anyone who has worked and had social security tax taken from their pay gets credits toward being eligible to collect social security benefits. You need a certain number of credits to begin collecting it, depending on when you were born. From 1929 on you need 40 credits or 10 years working.
