David Hockney, an English artist who began his career in painting, is highly regarded for his photographic explorations which he referred to as "joiners". These "joiners" made use of several photographs of the same subject, often from various perspectives, as a means of highlighting the movements of a given subject. Many "joiners" utilized Polaroid prints.

Chuck Close works in the photomosaic medium that you are suggesting.
