The camera as we know it is the result of a lengthy development over many years with input and contributions by a lot of different people. Isaac Newton started it off with the discovery of the different colors in light. Search online for a timeline and a list of contributors.

While photography is a relatively recent invention, the theory for cameras has been known for at least 25 centuries. A pinhole camera was described by chinese philosopher Mo Di in 2500 BC. The same basic design was used by Nicephore Niepce to make the first modern working camera in 1826.

The first usable camera was made by John Strognofe in 1685. However, the idea behind the camera and attempts to create a usable one had been going on since Greeks first described how one would work in BC times. The Panoramic camera was first patented in 1859, which is more like the camera we use today.
