The term 'Anakim' comes from the Bible. According to the Biblical record, the Anakim were a group of people who lived in the land of Canaan. Joshua and the people of Israel fought against them. It also seems from the Biblical record that the Anakim were large people of unusual height (Deuteronomy 2:10).
