The statistics are tricky because of the age & time element, but of all American males in 2006 aged 40 to 44, 18. 5% of them had never married. For females, same year, same ages, 13% of them had never married. Answer: yes, a significant number of people stay single.

Some people choose to not marry for many reasons. You shouldn't worry what other people want you to do but rather focus on what you want in order to be happy. There is a high divorce rate and by marrying just to fit in, you stand a greater chance of being in the unhappy group.
