Ones that I can think of off the top of my head are Maya Angelou, W.E.B. Du Bois, Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison, Gloria Naylor, Frederick Douglass, William Demby, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Ernest Gaines, Nella Larsen, Bill Cosby (of course known for acting and stand-up more than for writing).

Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple, is one of the most famous black writers. Others include Walter Mosley, who writes crime fiction and an intriguing genre called afrofuturist science fiction, and Toni Morrison, who wrote "Beloved." These are contemporary authors, but some earlier black writers include Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington.

Well known black writers include Frederick Douglas, who wrote the most famous slave narrative ever published. Langston Hughes was a great black poet. Maya Angelou has written about both early and modern experiences of slavery as well as black society. Malcolm X wrote about radical politics with energy and insight.

Jupiter Hammon is said to be the first published black writer in America. Black writers seem to love writing poetry best of all. Jupiter's poem is called "An Evening Thought: Salvation by Christ with Penitential Cries". Lucy Terry wrote the poem "Bars Fight", but Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave".
