There could be blood in the stool and that could be why it is black. If it is blood then it should be checked since no blood should ever be in the stool.

Dark or tarry stools are a result of digested, not fresh, blood. Blood that is digested comes from the stomach or intestine. I would have him checked just in case.

Almost all dogs will chew and perhaps swallow almost anything that captures their interest. This can be the cause of ulcers. While some ulcers can heal on their own, others can result in internal bleeding. Symptoms include blood in the stool(black stool) or vomit that looks like it has coffee grinds in it.
