Two of my favorites are Sandra Cisneros who wrote "The House on Mango Street" and "Woman Hollering Creek" and Julia Alvarez who wrote "In the Time of Butterflies" and "Once upon a Quinceanera". Both of these authors have written numerous short stories as well that are great for young readers.

Sandra Cisneros is a great Hispanic writer, who has written in many different media throughout her lifetime. She is still alive. She is most popularly known for writing The House on Mango Street, but she also has spent much of her life writing poignant, succint poetry and prose that truly highlights the latino experience in America.

One big one comes to mind when I think about this. Isabel Allende, she wrote The House of Spirits. This book is amazing, and everyone should read it and study it. It has everything in it happy events, sad events, and events that are all over the map. It also has a lot of magic realism in it as well.
