Which plants best tolerate salt when landscaping near the beach?

I find that the best tree that grows near the sea is the wax myrtle. Shrubs that grow well are oleander and yuccas. Pampas grass also grows well as does the flowering plant lantana. River Birch also seems to do well with the salt spray.

Some examples of plants that can tolerate salt are; Ivy geraniums used in hanging baskets, Portulaca, Daylilies and Bay Harbor junipers. Some others are the Prickly pear cactus and also Virginia creeper vines.

Wax Myrtle is one of the best beach growing trees out there in the sand. Shrubs and low cut shrubs that hug the ground grow well up on the dunes.

There are many plant that tolerate salt, they are: Ivy Geraniums hanging basket, Kalanchoe a perennial in Florida, Portulaca is drought and tolerate annual, Daylilies are moderately salt tolerant and Prickly Pear Cactus. Ground Cover includes: Engligh Ivy, Lilyturf, Virginia creeper vine and Bar Harbor Juniper.

Inland salt grass does pretty well as does sea pine. Best advice is to go to a local nursery and ask them. They are the local experts
