When it comes to safety heat pumps are a lot safer then your average fired furnaces since a heat pumps offer a more controlled heat and there is less of a chance of a flame out.

Heat pumps would be better as they encounter lesser energy loss than fired furnaces. Heat pumps are good to the environment as they don't pollute the atmosphere. Also they are technology wise so improved.
