Your shoulders should be square with the tee when you begin the downswing. If they are off or pointed away you most likely are not in line with a perfect sweet spot hit. Try taking slow strokes over and over to master this. Once mastered increase the speed until you feel comfortable.

You should have your back to the target when you start the downswing. Your shoulders should be roughly perpendicular to a line between you and the target. In other words, your stomach should be pointing away from the target. When you make the downswing and follow through, you will turn your body through until you are facing the target.

Your hands should be in front of your torso, if your hands are in front of your torso so are your shoulders. Try to keep your hands and arms in front of you for the duration of your swing. It should feel as though you're turning your core, which turns your shoulders which moves your hands and arms.

Assuming you are right handed, your left shoulder should be under your chin and about even with the ball position in relation to your body. Your right shoulder will be turned around behind your body as you are coiled up in the swing before you start your downswing. The exact position will vary depending on how much flexibility you have.

If you are a right handed golfer, your left shoulder should be behind the ball as far back as comfortable before you start your downswing. It's opposite for a left handed golfer.
