Something interesting I found out about the tobacco plant. When a tobacco plant is injured guess what it does??!! The roots actually make a lot of nicotine and then send it up to the shoot. Scientists have found a lot of chemicals (similar to hormones in humans) that regulate this!!

Nicotine can be found in the leaves of a tobacco plant. These same leaves can also be used as an insecticide as they are considered to be highly toxic.

Nicotine is a naturally-occurring amino acid found in the tobacco leaf. The leaves are harvested and cured and what follows is the slow oxidation of carotenoids in the tobacco leaf.

Nicotine is a chemical found throughout the entirety of the plant. It is synthesized in the roots and moves to leaves to work as an insecticide against insects and other herbivores.

The tobacco plant has nicotine in their nectar too. This helps in pollination - it kind of makes sure the insect leaves the flower and goes on to the next one as it tastes a little bad! The wonders of nature...

The tobacco plant has many, many species. They all belong to the genus Nicotiana. Tobacco is got from the leaves of these plants and this is where the nicotine is.

Nicotine makes up five percent of the plant speaking in weight proportionate terms. Its found on the tobacco buds of the plant that is removed and put in cigarettes, but also throughout the rest of the plant. Its a naturally occurring liquid alkaloid apparently. Though addictive, in and of itself not harmful, additives are harmful.

The tobacco plant contains nicotine in it's leaves. The stalk is only used to hang the plant so that it can dry out.

It is actually located at the bottom of the tobacco plant and it only comprises about 3% of total nicotine in the plant.
