Federal law prohibits marijuana everywhere in the United States. State law permits it, with a prescription (although these are easy to get) in California; the federal government is not currently enforcing federal prohibitions there, although that could change at any time.

Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington these are the only 14 states currently it must be prescribed by a doctor however. There are limits that you can have in each state and it varies from state to state. You have to get an ID card also usually.
