Chevrolet stamps the date, manufacturing plant, and engine type identification codes into the block during engine assembly, then adds the VIN number when the car is assembled. Code location depends on the engine type. Generally, V8 engines have the code on the front passenger side of the block, while 6-cylinders have it on the rear passenger side.

Engine numbers are only found on the vehicle VIN number. It is the 8th digit in the sequence. The number on the block is only a casting number and is the same on thousands of those engines. The only exception would be the Corvette but only before they were mass produced starting in 1984.

THe engine codes are stamped on the side of the engine block. It needs to be clean free of debree to see . then you can get a book or on the web to decode the engine. You will need to check all engine components if you are trying to find if your vehicle is all original.
