One thing to consider are rivers - as these kinda leached the gold and carry it with the. Some rivers I've heard that are good for gold panning are Menoninee River, the Rapid River, Slate River, the Huron and Little Huron Rivers. They all have some hot spots and tributaries.

The list is long and keeps growing - a lot of placer gold deposits. Here are a few I know - Marquette, Allegan, Antrim, Baldwin, Cadillac, Cass, Charlevoix, Emmet, Montcalm, Manistee, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Okland, Ontonagon, Wexford, and White Cloud.

I've heard of lots of great gold panning stories from Marquette County. There used to be a Ropes Gold Mine there and so you could get some gold there. People living in the Upper Peninsula have apparently have ways of getting gold too. You could start your hunt here!

heard the same of Menominee County - s'posed to still have an active mine. Dunno where exactly it is though. You could look at a map or something.  add a comment

You can go gold panning in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan only. If you go to the Lower Pennisula you will be disappointed, the Lower Pennisula is all sedementary rock while the Upper Pennisula is bedrock (better for minerals). You should know that gold has never been found on Michigan though... only copper.

Manistee National Forest allows recreational gold panning if you first talk to a ranger about doing it and where it is legal to pan.
