Use rustic-looking furniture. Have your son design his own cattle brand and use a wood burner to put it on a plaque over his bed. Hang rope across the window, fold bandannas into triangles and affix to the rope for a valance. Hang pictures of famous cowboys on the walls.

Color schemes are significant when it comes to decorating. For a Western theme, I'd go with earthy tones, specifically brown, beige and/or deep reds. This can be applied to the wall color and curtain color. If you're looking to go all out, including cowboy hats, stars, perhaps a toy cactus, and so on would accentuate to the "cowboy" theme.

There are three photo-packed books that you can reference for clever Western-themed decorating ideas: "Cowboy Style" by Chase Reynolds Ewald, "Cabin Style: Decorating with Rustic, Adirondack, and Western Collectibles" by Dian Zillner and Suzanne Silverthorn, and "Contemporary Western Design" by Thea Marx.
