It was invented in 1748 by William Cullen at University of Glasgow. How it was not intended for practical purpose.

The freezing and refrigeration process has many different historical dates for the stages of how it has evolved to our present system. Various gases were experimented with to create the freezing process. The gas had to be safe. The cooling of the rapid expansion of this gas is what makes the refrigeration of today.
