They were not mass produced and the first camera was made in the early 19th century. There was no money to mass produce at the time.

The camera obscura which projects an image to a darkened plane has been around since ancient times. However the first person to record an image with a camera was Niepce in 1827. He used a wooden box with a lens which was not mass produced. The first mass produced camera was the Giroux Daguerreotype in 1839.
