The United States Constitution was officially signed on September 17, 1789. This document replaced the failed Articles of Confederation and provided for a strong federal government capable of dealing with problems the new nation faced.

The Constitution was written in 1787, finished in September, and adopted by the delegates to the convention. The government began using it in 1789 after it had been ratified.
