Television was actually invented in the year 1927, by a man named Philo Farnsworth. Television sets began to become more popular in the late 1930's, and have evolved technology-wise since then. Many homes are not without a tv nowadays.

Television became commercially available since the 30's. Maybe your grandmother's parents didn't had the money at the time when it became available.

Television as we know it today was the result of the work of many people over time, and there is some controversy about who invented television and when. Earliest research was completed in the 19th century, while Philo Farnsworth is generally credited with creating the first electronic TV in the 1920's.
