The question of slavery was enormous throughout the country, so the presidential election of 1860 was an important one. Northern Dems supported Lincoln's rival, Sen. Stephen Douglas. Lincoln did well in the election, which was 11/6/1860, particularly in the North, but got less than 40% of the popular vote. The electoral college sealed his election in a landslide.
