This is a very bad fire hazard. First make sure you have the right type and wattage of bulb in the socket. Using the wrong bulb can pull too much power and cause overheating. Check the power cord and light for damage and short circuits as well. If everything else is fine, replace the bulb as it may be faulty.

The best solutions would probably be to either switch to lower wattage light bulbs or replace your bulbs with cooler florescent light bulbs.

Some lights are equipped with a thermal cutout. When too high a wattage bulb is used it will cause the light to flicker or turn off all together.
