The deal for a given light output, CFLs use 20 to 33 percent of the power of equivalent incandescent lamps. Since lighting accounted for approximately 9% of household eletricity usage in the United States in 2001, widespread use of CRLs could save as much as 7% of total US household usage.

A compact fluorescent lamp is designed to use less power and have longer life as when compared to incandescent lamps. That is the reason they are expensive.

I am not sure exactly why they do not work in your lamps. They are good for use because of course they save energy. A downside is that they do contain mercury so they should be disposed of properly.

They cost less to operate and last longer then traditional light bulbs. if you are having a hard time finding them for your lamps, try a hardware store. They carry shapes and sizes most department stores do not.

High efficiency light bulbs are designed to fit in the same sockets that regular incandescent bulbs fit in to. They may be very expensive at small local stores, but typically big-box retailers sell them for less money than the old incandescent bulbs because the fluorescent lights are subsidized so heavily by the energy company. Check home depot, target, etc.
