A general rule of thumb is to do most planting in the spring. Planting holly is no exception. And, the general guidelines apply, soil should be mixed with some peat moss, add proper fertilizer to the soil. Planting should be to the proper depth, and water sufficiently, but not excessively.

Plant holly late in the winter or early in the spring. Plant them when they are young. Put a layer of mulch on them about 2 or 3 inches thick. You can also plant them in the fall but before the first frost. Do not plant it in the summer.

Hollys are best planted in the spring or fall, just before frost arrives. Hollys prefer rich, slightly acidic, and well-drained soil. You can always mix rich soil into the ground to help the plants if you need to.

When planting Holly, climate is an issue. In harsh climates plant the holly seed or bare root in spring after the threat of frost has passed. In warmer climates planting can take place in winter or spring. If transplanting, make sure to get a large root piece and plant in the winter.
