All spanking is abuse, and in some states it is punishable by law. Earn the child's respect by your own awesome behavior, patience and goodness and he or she will love living up to your role modeling. Most misbehavior in children is the result of inadequate attention and care. Try reading the classic P.E.T. -- Parent Effectiveness Training.

If bruises are left it is definitely considered abuse. I also think that if the child is spanked anywhere other than on the butt it could be considered abuse or if the parent or person doing the spanking is so angry they have lost control and don't know when to stop. a couple swats should be sufficient.

It is usually when a care taker is angry, stressed, or not within their right fram of mind. They usually take other objects to spank a child with. When you are hitting the child repeatedly over a span of seconds. Usually 1 good swat with your hand does the trick for most kids.

In some circles, any spanking is abusive. If you teach your children to behave appropriately, there should be no reason to spank them. Teach them correct responses to situations. If you spank your kids, you know if you are abusive. If kids are afraid of you, you are abusing them. If they lie, they are afraid to tell the truth.
