The 2008 MLB regular season ended on Tuesday, September 30th. It originally was to end Sunday September 28th, but make-up games for rainouts earlier in the season needed to be played on Monday the 29th and Tuesday the 30th, mainly to determine playoff spots. Overall, the MLB season ended with the conclusion of the World Series on October 29th.

Well the 2008 season ended in 2008 (first weekend in October). Same for the 2009 season (ends first week in October). The postseason starts the first week in October, and is finished usually around the last week in October (depending on scheduling, travel, field availability, etc. ). Season will always be finished by November 1st.

The 2009 regular season will end on October 4, 2009. The World Series begins October 28. The 2008 season, which you asked about, ended the regular season on September 28 with the Series ending on October 29. The schedule is pretty flexible with a few weeks variation depending on the season.
