Diamonds, with a MOHS hardness of 10, are usually considered the hardest thing on earth but wurtzite boron nitride and lonsdaleite (hexagonal diamond) have recently been discovered to be harder.

Diamonds are the most resistant to scratching when tested by the Moh's Hardness scale. However, diamonds are very brittle, which is what allows them to be cut and shaped. There are some manmade substances (like alloys of titanium and allotropes of carbon)that are harder, as well as substances that display more tensile strength and resistance to shattering.

Diamonds are indeed the hardest substance on earth. Hardness is determined by what a material can scratch, or what can scratch it. A diamond can scratch anything but another diamond.
