What are things I can say to someone to cheer them up if they have depression?

I have a good friend with depression and I don't know what to say to her.

Answer by  Anonymous

Tell her that the definition of depression is a condition in which our brains are making outrageously false statements to us over and over and we are making the mistake of believing the statements. Let _other_ people put us down. In our own heads we should be our own cheerleaders.

Clinical depression can't just be "cheered up". Talk about things that she is interested in to take her mind off herself. Keep her active and busy, if possible.

Those with clinical depression are more than sad, it is a deep chemical imbalance. That diagnosis can lead to fears of rejection or being seen as crazy. The best things to say are, "I am here for you", and "I will listen when you want to share. "

If your friend is simply in a low mood, you might try and gently elicit what might have upset her. However if your friend has clinical depression, a serious psychological disorder, you can't "cheer her up. " Encouraging her to seek medical help. Remind her that she has a disability and she needs support to manage it.

Just tell her that you care about her and if she needs anything to ask you. I have major depressive disorder and that is what helps me from my friends. Bear with her, she's probably just trying to stay alive right now.

You can tell your friend that God has good plans for everybody and what ever happens, it happens for good and lowest tide is beginning of new high tide.

Don't try to "cheer her up. " This is one of the biggest mistakes people make when a friend or loved one is suffering from depression. Depression is a chemical problem with the brain, not just being sad. Treat her like you have always treated her.
