They are two ways to clean coins. 1 is using 5% acid hydrochloric and leave the coins in it for around 5 minutes. 2 is safe, harmless and serve the purpose way, by using some carbonated drinks sort of COKE or PEPSI. Simply leave the coins in a bowl of carbonated drinks for 10 minutes and it is done.

I recommend soaking them in jewelry cleaner. This is a non-abrasive way to remove any dirt or other 'junk' that accumulates on coins. Follow the instructions on the jewelry cleaner bottle, typically they come with little brushes so you can brush anything off the coin that is needed. It's also extremely gentle and shouldn't hurt any part of the coin.
